Girlguiding IW young members, across the Island are invited to visit the Royal Yacht Squadron and find out about a broad range of maritime careers which might appeal to them. Schools have been asked to send as many pupils as possible across the course of the day – younger ones for ideas and inspiration, and older ones for more specific careers advice.
The event – the Royal Yacht Squadron Foundation Maritime Careers Fair – will be held on Thursday 1st October from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Castle on the Parade in Cowes.
The amazing diversity of opportunities in the maritime sector will be showcased by a broad range of organisations, including the Royal Navy and BAE, boatbuilders and engineers, cruise ships and ferries, photographers and training establishments. There also will be a unique chance for young people to explore a variety of workboats, yachts – and HMS Medusa – in the RYS Haven. This year we are also including advice on interview skills and one-to-one input on students’ work styles and aptitudes, as well as a prize competition.
James Stevens, Chairman of the Foundation, said: “We know there are many young islanders who are simply unaware of the maritime careers that are available to them, and what their earnings might be. We want to change that.”
Founded in 2015 to honour the bicentenary of the Royal Yacht Squadron, the Foundation was set up with a single aim: to give back to the Isle of Wight community by empowering young islanders with the skills and confidence to succeed in maritime careers. Since then it has awarded over half a million pounds in grants supporting jobs ranging from marine engineering to superyacht crew positions, entirely funded by RYS members.
Working with schools, colleges, local authorities, training providers, and employers, the Foundation offers funding, usually between £250 and £3,000 but sometimes more, to support young people aged 15 to 29. This funding helps cover training costs, apprenticeships, equipment, travel, and essential qualifications, breaking down the financial barriers that often prevent island youth from progressing.
