Although tickets are now SOLD OUT for this year’s Sky Presents the IW Festival for those lucky enough to have a ticket there will be the chance to see The Cure on the Sunday.
Goth Rockers, The Cure ,will bring down the curtain on this year’s Isle of Wight Festival when they take to the stage at Seaclose Park on Sunday the 21st of June.
Founded in 1976 in Crawley, Surrey by lead singer Robert Smith and drummer Lol Tolhurst, they were originally called Malice and then Easy Cure before eventually adopting the name The Cure in 1978.
Robert Smith is the only ever present member, although Simon Gallup was only missing for a short spell over the years.
Their current line-up consists of Robert Smith vocals and guitar, Simon Gallup on bass guitar, Roger O’Donnell on keyboards, Jason Cooper on drums, and Reeves Gabrels guitar.
“Three Imaginary Boys”, their debut album, gave them their first chart success and it spawned the hit single, the mesmerising “A Forest”, plus an early version of ” Boys Don’t Cry”.
Over a career spanning five decades, they have amassed 34 hit singles and 27 hit albums, including two number ones, in their 13 top ten albums. Surprisingly, they have only achieved 4 top 10 singles “Lullaby”, “Friday I’m in Love” , “Love Cats” and “High”.
Known for his wild hair and smeared lipstick, vocalist Robert Smith toured with Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1979, but he decided to commit to the Cure, despite touring with them again in 1983.
By the late 1980’s the group were filling stadiums before a headline slot at the 1995 Glastonbury Festival.
Former member Lol Tolhurst sued Smith, the band and the record label for alleged unpaid royalties, but his claim failed and he was left with a large legal bill.
In 2019, The Cure were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Coming up to date, Robert Smith is a guest artiste on the upcoming Rolling Stones album “ Foreign Tongues“ which is their 25th studio album, due for release on 10th July.
There are 14 tracks and other guests include Sir Paul McCartney, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Stevie Winwood.
