Teams are signing up for last Wightlink Wight Challenge

17th September 2016 will see the last Wightlink Wight Challenge and organisers are delighted that so many teams are signing up for what they hope will be a bumper year. However, there are still spaces if you fancy a challenge and there is still time for you and a team of three to get yourselves fit!

Organiser Joanna Minchin says ‘I am receiving many emails from people expressing sadness that it is the final event. However, I was delighted to receive an entry from the Jimmy Wights team who entered the first one in 2004, and many in between. They saw it was the final one and wanted to be part of it once more. So many people have enjoyed the event over the years so I feel sure this September’s event will finish on a high.”

The event raises money for three charities who are working hard to promote the Challenge, they all help on the day and welcome teams to the event:

Tina Richardson, Events and Community Fundraising Manager for Wessex Heartbeat says “Wessex Heartbeat is one of the premier charities in the Region and heart disease is something that sadly is highly likely to touch many people, vital funds are required to support people suffering from any form of heart disease so by supporting the Wightlink Wight Challenge you can help the charity to continue to improve the already excellent cardiac care provided in Southampton, for families from the Isle of Wight”.

Lizette van Niekerk, Fundraising Manager, Sail 4 Cancer says “Last year we were able to help a record number of families to have a break from cancer. It is only with the support of fundraisers like the competitors and supporters of the Wightlink Wight Challenge that we are able to do our work and give these families the chance to have a bit of joy in their lives away from cancer”.

Yvonne Campbell, Community Fundraiser, The Rainbow Centre says “Being that this is the last year that the Wightlink Wight Challenge is taking place, we are looking forward to making this year’s finale event the best year ever!”

Wightlink Ferries have supported the event since 2004 and been title sponsor since 2011. Without their help the Wight Challenge wouldn’t be where it is today which is on the brink of touching the quarter million pound mark for raising money for charity. The organisers are incredibly grateful for their support which also offers all teams complimentary ferry travel, this goes hugely towards a warm welcome to the Island for visiting teams.

A quick reminder of the Wightlink Wight Challenge; teams of three cycle 19 miles, canoe 2 miles and run 8 miles.  Times are taken for your team but prizes will be awarded to the highest fund raiser.
