CELEBRATING AGE

Islanders are being invited to recognise the achievements of local older people and celebrate their contribution to Island life, by nominating them for a Celebrating Age Award. Sponsored by Wright Estate Agency and hosted by Age UK Isle of Wight (Age UKIW), the Annual Celebrating Age Awards will take place on the 6th October and be part of the wider Celebrating Age Festival – October 1st – 7th October 2016.

If you know an individual, or a group, who has dedicated time and effort to making the Isle of Wight a better place to live, helped out in their community, or who has defied age as a barrier to overcome a physical challenge, or who has worked with younger people to create, accomplish or campaign nominate them now to win a first prize of £100.

Tell the organisers how someone you know deserves recognition for their efforts by nominating them for a Celebrating Age Awards in one of the following categories:

 

Age Friendly Entrepreneur – Wrights Estate Agency

Someone over 50 who has made a big contribution to island business.

 

Age Friendly Contribution to the community – Southern Vectis

Someone over 50 who has devoted their time and effort to changing the lives of others.

Someone who has impacted the community in a significant way.

 

Age Friendly Arm in Arm – Sainsbury’s

An older adult or group of people, young and old, who work together across generations.

A group who contributes towards bridging the gap between young and older people.

 

Age Friendly Impact – Learning Links

An older person who is selflessly making a difference to other people’s lives.

Someone who has generally impacted the island in a positive way over the years.

 

Age Friendly Challenge of the Year – Chamber of Commerce

An older person who overcame a serious challenge and showed courage and determination to inspire others.

 

Age Friendly volunteer – supported by Southern Housing Group

Someone who devoted his/her time to volunteering and helping others.

 

Age Friendly Team – supported by Co-op

A Group of older adults who worked together to do something outstanding.

Age Friendly Active Person – supported by Tesco

Someone over 50 who continues to be dedicated to and passionate about sport. Or someone who has achieved great things by crossing the finish line in a physical activity.

 

You can nominate via the Age UK Isle of Wight Website (www.ageukiw.org.uk) by filling out a nomination form and emailing it back to nominations@ageukiw.org.uk , by going into the Age UK IW office at 147 High Street, Newport to pick up a form or by calling (01983) 525282 and requesting a form by post or email free of charge.

 

All completed forms can be returned free of charge to: Age UK Isle of Wight, Freepost RTGG-LRCS-JRBZ, Newport, PO30 1TY.

 

The closing date for all nominations is the 22nd September 2016. Winners will be selected by an independent judging panel representing different Public and Community Services and winners will be announced during the Celebrating Age Festival – October 1st – 7th October 2016.

A full programme of events is planned for the Celebrating Age Festival.  A list of, mostly free, events across the Island will be available on the Age UK Isle of Wight web-site and in other promotional material.

A sample of the events are:

Saturday, 1st October – Vintage Tea Party, Ryde Library 1pm – 3pm.+ other events on the day, Coffee Mornings at Cowes, Ventnor and Freshwater Libraries and Tea Parties at Newport and Sandown  Libraries. Most of the libraries have other activities alongside these events and include Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover at Ventnor Library which continues through the week at usual Opening Hours.

Sunday 2nd October- Walk & Tea Party with the IW Ramblers- Yarmouth – Yar Estuary – Start 2pm at CHOYD Hall. Free Walk, Tea £4.

 Monday 3rd October- Men in sheds open afternoon- Age UK IW, Newport.14:00-16:00.

Information Café, Whitmore Court, School Lane, Freshwater, 11:00 – 14:00.(Information on activities in West Wight.)

Tuesday 4th October- Coffee Morning- OddFellows – Unity Hall, 20 S. Thomas’ Square, Newport, 10:00- 13:00.

Family History- Sandown Library-11:00 – 12:00noon.

Creative Learning Taster Sessions, Adult Learning Community – Westridge, Ryde-10:00-12.30pm-Free but booking required through Adult community Learning: christine.groves@iow.gov.uk or call 01983 817280.

As part of the Celebrating Age Festival, ‘DanceMakers’, (a dance for wellbeing project) will have pop up sessions across the Island.
